Common installer hiccups and how to fix them.
Windows shows a "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen" warning
Install from the Microsoft Store to skip this warning entirely. If you download the MSI directly from GitHub Releases, click "More info" → "Run anyway". We sign Bom with a Microsoft EV code-signing certificate.
Mac says "developer cannot be verified"
- System Settings → Privacy & Security → Security → click "Open Anyway".
- Or right-click the app in Finder → "Open" → confirm in the dialog.
Signing
We distribute DMGs signed and notarised with Apple Developer ID A9PV64FHUC. The warning only appears on first launch.
First launch takes a long time
On first run, Bom downloads ~2-3 GB of isolated runtimes for the 21 MCP tools. Over Wi-Fi this takes 1-2 minutes. The setup screen shows progress.
Which system permissions do I need to grant?
- macOS — Accessibility (automation), Screen Recording (screenshots)
- Windows — no extra permissions (UAC pass)
- Both — file access (user folders), network access
